Do you want to know more about what makes Addison great?  Addison offers a Citizens Academy to provide a behind the scenes look at the Town’s operations.  Participants will learn the basics of municipal government through tours, activities and face-to-face interaction with various Town leaders and staff.  

Benefits:

The Citizens Academy offers many rewards to its participants:

  • Create an informed group of citizens who will better be able to become involved in Town activities, serve on Council-appointed boards, commissions, committees, and task forces or will otherwise become involved in the Town’s governance.
  • Provide an opportunity for citizens to learn about the Town of Addison government through first-hand experience and gain exposure to the wide range of services, functions, activities and issues.

Class Size:

Classes will be limited to no more than 24 participants.  The Addison Citizens Academy is limited to Addison residents only.

Details:

The next Citizens Academy will be in the Fall of 2024. Applications will be available in the summer of 2024.

The Citizens Academy will consist of sessions over the course of four weeks with a graduation held at a City Council meeting following completion of all sessions.  Sessions will be approximately 7 hours long with a lunch break. 

Previous Citizens Academy Schedule: 

  • Kick-Off Dinner and Opening Session (Thursday Evening)
    • Kick-off dinner with members of the City Council, key staff members and Citizens Academy alumni.  Learn the basics of local government to set the foundation for an exciting month of sessions around the city. 
  • Citizens Academy Session 2
    • Learn about your City Council's duties, how the Town manages its finances and how we recruit and retain top talent in a competitive job market.  Also hear how staff plans for and attracts business talent and tourists into the community.
  • Citizens Academy Session 3
    • Learn the ins and outs of how the Town maintains its beautiful parks and infrastructure supporting streets, water and more.  Spend time getting to know how we promote it all through our award-winning marketing efforts.
  • Citizens Academy Session 4
    • Learn more about the Town's world class events and airport and the impact these have on the community.  
  • Citizens Academy Session 5
    • Get to know Addison's public safety programs through informative sessions and tours.
  • Graduation Reception and Ceremony
    • The Citizens Academy graduation will be held during the City Council meeting work session.

Completing the full Addison Citizens Academy curriculum is a requirement to be honored at the graduation ceremony.

Eligibility: 

Participants must be a current Addison resident. The minimum age for enrollment is 18 years of age. Completion of the Addison Citizens Academy Enrollment Application is required.

Applications:

Applications for the next Academy will open Summer 2024. 

Cost:

There is an Academy fee, which goes toward the cost of meals and course supplies for each session.  This will be requested from you upon Academy acceptance.  If cost is a barrier to your participation, please let us know.  A full or partial scholarship may be available.
