Short-Term Rental Registration

Short-Term Rental Registration

All short-term rental operators will be required to register and apply for a Short-Term Rental (STR) Permit with the Town of Addison.

What is a Short-Term Rental (STR)?

Any residential property or portion of a property that is rented out on a short-term basis – for a period of fewer than 30 days – is considered to be a short-term rental. This includes homes that are listed for rent on Airbnb, VRBO Vacation Rentals, HomeAway, and similar websites.

Regulations

At its March 12, 2019 meeting, the City Council amended Addison’s Code of Ordinances in order to establish regulations for short-term rentals. The ordinance requires property owners offering short-term rentals to register with the Town and follow certain standards. You can view the original short-term rental ordinance here

On March 10, 2020, the City Council amended the Short-Term Rental Ordinance in order to revise the registration fee, proof of primary residence requirements, and the extend the Sunset Review through April 30, 2021. You can view the ordinance amendments here. Then on October 26, 2021, City Council repealed the Sunset Review.

Registration costs $115.00 (late registration $230.00), will be valid for a period of one year, and will require the host to meet certain minimum standards and restrictions as outlined in the ordinance.

Along with registering for the STR permit, the ordinance also states that Short-Term Rentals are required to pay a hotel occupancy tax every month. You can find additional information and instructions on paying hotel occupancy tax here.

Once the yearly STR Permit is issued, a notice will be sent to all property owners within 200 feet of the rental property, inclusive of contact information for a 24-hour complaint hotline.

This ordinance does not prohibit short-term rentals, but it does allow the Town to monitor short-term rental properties and set certain standards in order to protect the integrity of Addison neighborhoods and the safety of the community.
